4.1 Opening Voyager-NG on a MUI Public Screen

Although we do not have the space to cover all the configurations within the excellent MUI program, the most important configuration is to allow Voyager to run on a screenmode with more than 4 or 8 colours.

You could create a Workbench screen running in 256-colours, however Workbench in anything more than 16 colours is practically unusable.

Voyager can open its own public screen which is configured within MUI prefs. Here is an outline of how you create a new public screen for Voyager:

1. Run Voyager offline (ie. when you are not connected to the Internet)

2. Select MUI from the settings menu. You will be presented with the MUI Prefs GUI - go to the "system" option within the lister to the left of this GUI.

   

3. Within the system section press the "Call Inspector" button and a new GUI will appear called "PSI - Public Screen Inspector".

4. Within the Public Screen Inspector GUI click on the "New" button. A new screen called "(unnamed)" is created and this appears in the list above.

   

5. Double-click on this new screen and an "Edit Screen" GUI will appear. This GUI allows you to edit the new screenmode you have just created.

6. Click within the "Public Name" text box, delete the text and type in a new public name for your screen (we suggest you call it "Voyager").

7. Click within the "Screen Title" text box, delete the text and type in a new name for this screen (we suggest you call it "Voyager Screen").

8. Go to the Display folder and new options will appear.

   

9. Within the Display folder select the screen mode for your new screen from the list on the left.

10. Slide the Depth slider to position 6. This gives you a 64-colour screen. Most web pages will look good in 64-colours and this is the perfect screenmode for speed and number of colours. If you select 7 or 8 you'll find your Amiga is too slow for quick web access.

11. Press "OK" from the "Edit Screen" GUI and you be back within the PSI GUI.

12. Select "Save" from the PSI GUI, your settings will be saved and you will be returned to MUI settings for Voyager.

13. Use the Public Screen drop-down menu to select the new screen you have just created. This should be called "Voyager".

14. Press "Save" and the MUI preferences GUI will dissapear and your settings will be saved for Voyager.

Your Voyager GUI will now update and you will be able to use Voyager within 64 colours everytime it is launched.
